Case study overview
Abbey Systems Ltd
Abbey Systems Ltd has been developing and manufacturing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for the power, telecoms and water markets since 1978.
Due to the individual demands of field applications, Abbey systems approached Designbrand to design a modular housing for their pump controllers.
The client's in-house team had redeveloped their circuit design to a common denominator and needed to house them in a suitable way.
They could guarantee this to be within a particular size and volume.
Depending on the application, the controller housing would constitute between three and six modules plus an optional emergency battery compartment which needed to be accessed for maintenance.
The housing had to be robust physically and withstand near caustic environments.
Working closely with Abbey's marketing and design departments, Designbrand proposed a modular snap-fit aluminium extrusion.
This could hold printed circuits in all the desired positions and build forms.
Only two cost-effective tools had to be manufactured.
It made possible a variety of housing configurations which could be adapted at short notice to custom configurations.
Mounting plates and facias could also be custom laser cut at short notice.
Maximum adaptability of the concept to all possible modular configurations within the product's range, while minimising the necessity to hold a lot of stock.
The product was developed and guided into manufacture by the designers.
Designbrand provided full technical drawings, bills of materials, product graphic templates and supervised the first batch of manufacture.
