Brand & Exhibition Collateral

In May 2005, Massey University's Wellington School of Fine Arts launched Litmus: a new platform for contemporary arts research, practice and presentation. Distinct amongst arts initiatives nationally, Litmus is a catalyst for the production of new work in new contexts. Facilitating creative and scholarly work of artists, writers and curators - projects are public, temporary and operate beyond the 'gallery space'.

Flexibility and responsiveness are core values of the Litmus project. Both the institute and the brand are not static - both advocate development and change. The work of practitioners involved in Litmus will shape the aesthetic and conceptual face of every new design application. Communication, design process and consultation had to be capable of evolving, or adapting with each new project.

umbrella resolved a sound and pragmatic institutional brand and design strategy and also aligned this with a strategy for individual exhibition brands within the broader context. An edition of stickers has created a versatile, responsive brand: objects with numerous uses as business cards, letterheads and the seal on folded posters to create envelopes.

Each residency is also promoted through a one colour poster, designed collaboratively with the close involvement of Litmus resident and staff.

Each Poster also operates as posted DL invitation, and once folded to A5 is also distributed within Wellingtons CBD. This is the result of budget-conscious discussion and decision that has enabled Litmus to gain maximum promotion at minimum ongoing costs.
