Case study overview

Cadbury - Impulse Chiller award winning

Idea: Develop a confectionary counter top chiller unit.

Objective: Design a refrigerated confectionery display with a design aesthetic that, fitted the Cadbury image and would attract customers to the chilled confectionery. This would ultimately lift confectionery sales, especially in warmer months where there is traditionally a decline in confectionery sales when consumers opt for cooler impulse products.

Make the chiller lid-less as research showed any simple barrier between product and customer reduces sales. Solution: The solution involved overcoming the loss of cooled air due to having no lid. This was achieved by Twin Sheet pressure forming the major panels in the unit which were then foam filled to make the unit extremely well insulated.

A Thermo-electric, Peltier device was used to cool the unit which kept the weight down to allow easy export, while giving the required power to out perform several other units made by Cadbury in the UK, South Africa and Australia in controlled tests which were conducted during prototyping.

The units are now being rolled out throughout the Cadbury business units globally.
