Case study overview
Conference Branding and Communications
With increasing attention paid to 'first nations' issues around the globe, it was inevitable that indigenous broadcasting organizations, given their ubiquitous dual challenges around resourcing and competition, would initiate a forum that facilitated sharing of their rapidly accumulating experience and expertise.
Enter WITBC, the World Indigenous Broadcasting Conference; the inaugural event to be held in 2008 and hosted by Maori Television.
The first challenge was to develop a brand identity for the organization that reflected the dichotomous values of inclusiveness and uniqueness, in a manner sympathetic to the very human-spirited vision of the founding broadcasters.
Along with an institutional identity, WITBC required a system for branding each conference (to be held every other year).
The solution comprises a wordmark for WITBC, created out of letterforms inspired by cuneiforms, runes and alphabets from around the world and rendered in simple black and white. The event logo sits above the WITBC signature, and is composed of an icon representing the host (in this case Maori Television, hence a koru) rendered in a rough, hand-printed style, with the indigenous name (Aotearoa) of the host nation alongside the date.
Communications developed for the event include a website and e-marketing campaign, along with direct mail and collateral.
