Case study overview
fumacare
fumacare's design brief to Designz (and Zetec Ltd) was to design a new product for their highly successful hygiene service business that would introduce significant benefits and features over existing manually-operated sanitary bin products on the market, including their own sanitary bin.
Based on our research and analysis of fumacare's existing manually-operated sanitary bin, the competition, the end users (which included female users, service staff, and cleaning staff) and their hygiene service business clients requirements, a number of exciting new design opportunities were identified.
Our solution innovatively and positively addresses all of the problems and negative perceptions that women associate with the existing manually-operated sanitary bins.
This design establishes a new paradigm within this product category which we have labelled a 'SaniPod', as it is radically different in functionality and aesthetics to all existing sanitary bins.
In addition to the SaniPod, all aspects of the overall delivery and cleaning system were improved and redesigned, including new: truck racking, hand trolley, carry bags andncleaning racks etc.
This product design won the gold award in The New Zealand Plastics Industry Design Awards 2004.
Responses from fumacare's clients and end users have been very positive and the quantity of units in the marketplace has exceeded initial forecasts, and continues to grow.
Although developed primarily for fumacare's own use, interest has already been shown by a company with markets in the United States, United Kingdom and Asia.
