Case study overview

Home & Leisure NZ Ltd

NZ owned Home & Leisure NZ Ltd, importers of outdoor & interior furniture, had outgrown their warehouse space.

Not wanting to have multiple facilities drove the decision to shift their whole operation across the road to where Property owners ING, were looking for a long term tenant.

ING were prepared to upgrade both the exterior & interior of the building. We were appointed to provide a concept layout, specification & once lease negotiations were completed, design & detail the project. The refurbishment included totally refitting & extending the office floors to suit Home & Leisure's requirements.

CEO, John Bishop, said we were in a design desert and dreaded the process. We wanted to create an innovative design but didn't know how to go about it.

'We didn't know how to approach things but when we were introduced to Malcolm & Sumner they gave us the confidence they could work with us. We were impressed with their track record & their design approach."

'Our previous building was well designed but it was tired & poorly maintained. By solving the warehouse issue, we were also able to provide a larger showroom, better offices & improve our position in the market."

'We are proud of our new premises. We've created something with WOW factor. The showroom is quite something '"it's a neat facility '" light, airy & flexible and we'll make sure we maintain it properly."

'The offices have lifted staff moral. There is better work flow in the open areas & communication has improved. We've pulled the whole team back together including better access to managers. Everyone in the office now gets a view & natural light."

'Using a designer who can interpret your needs & provide good, practical, workable solutions is important. Diane is a good problem solver & very open and obliging. Having someone to take care of all the details made it easy."

'Keeping to budget was important to us. M & S performed. They have good associations with suppliers & trades. Having someone organise the installation of the fit-out was very helpful & their recommendations saved us time researching what was out there."

'It was a great team effort. The builders were fantastic. Good communication between all parties made the project a success and the experience a good one. By having everything down in writing meant there were no disagreements at the end.'
