Case study overview

Landcrab - Electric All Purpose Vehicle award winning

The Landcrab is an all purpose utility vehicle powered by electric motors. Formworks was charged with the chassis engineering as well as the functionality and aesthetic design. Extensive market research/analysis and prototype testing was carried out in collaboration with the client.

Thanks to electric motor technology, the Landcrab is a zero emissions vehicle with performance capabilities potentially superior to those of a conventional ATV. As the use of these vehicles is often intermittent in nature, using combustion engines creates potential for either wasting fossil fuel during idling or excessive starter motor wear. The landcrab's electric motors however require no starting and do not draw any charge on standby.

While providing opportunity to maximise the storage capabilities of the landcrab, the hub mounted electric motors also created a challenge in terms of laying out components such as brake assemblies an suspension and steering elements. This was overcome by exhaustive CAD modelling of various configurations and part combinations. The chassis and suspension geometries were also optimised to make the most of the extra space created.

The body work is based on a concept of modular functional units situated around a central frame platform. This allows for endless reconfiguration opportunities and excellent adaptability for specific uses. The landcrab has purposefully aggressive, utilitarian styling that emphasises the fact that despite being battery powered this vehicle is endowed with performance to make it competitive with conventional ATV's . The exposed framework accentuates the functional nature of the bodywork and references modular systems.
