Case study overview
Mobile Medical Technologies Ltd
In 2001 MMT recognised the need to develop a mobile operating theatre to bring day surgery facilities to small rural hospitals.
This theatre would build on the established public image and service record existing with their Lithotripsy Bus.
Designbrand was engaged to extend MMT's brand identity to its mobile operating theatre and apply this to a standard Freightliner tractor unit.
All fittings were to be manufactured as one-off items with the fewest possible modifications to the original truck.
Designbrand also had to work within the Land Transport Safety Authority regulations.
The client was presented with a range of sketch concepts.
These contained the necessary level of detail to communicate the styling idea, while retaining enough flexibility in the way it might be blended with physical constraints of the existing cab.
The designteam was able to achieve a strong three-dimensional identity within the constraints of the LTSA safety regulations.
The aerodynamics for spray deflection were significantly improved and air expansion chambers were developed to guarantee sufficient cooling for the power unit.
The brand concept was extended into a graphic application of the corporate identity to balance the visual volumes of the whole trailer unit.
The client achieved a strong visual identity for their new flagship theatre.
This identity and its public recognition as a unique vehicle has been an instrumental part in the acceptance of scheduled rural surgery in New Zealand.
