Rotoroa Island

For over 100 years, Rotoroa Island has been an island apart, off-limits to all but a few souls isolated there for alcohol and drug rehabilitation in the care of the Salvation Army. Today, Rotoroa Island is accessible to everyone.

The new identity is layered with the island's history and stories of its inhabitants. The stencil style lettering of the logotype mirrors typography found on hay bales left on the island. Likewise, the colours Karaka Green and Pioneer Red were chosen to mirror the colours of haysheds built on the island by early settlers.

The use of typographic brackets as a graphic device encompasses the hidden history of the island apart. Likewise, the large entrance ramp featuring 12 laser-cut logs acknowledges the 12-step alcoholic rehabilitation program employed on the island for the last 80 years.

A consistent wayfinding system was needed for visitors to navigate their way across the island landscape and through the island's history. This required destination signs, trail markers, and information boards throughout.

The system developed creates a consistent style utilizing wood, metal and natural colours that sit in harmony with the environment while effectively signposting the trail.

Rotoroa Island has become a destination for tourists and locals alike.
