Case study overview
Stevens Lawson Architects identity
To develop a new identity for Stevens Lawson Architects Ltd. A typographic logo was designed and applied to a basic set of stationery items - letterhead, business cards and envelope.
In addition to the identity and stationery, 10 copies of a small profile were digitally produced and handmade.
In 2002, Nicholas Stevens of Nicholas Stevens Architects formed a partnership with colleague, Gary Lawson, to establish Stevens Lawson Architects Ltd.
The partners wanted to establish an identity that would reflect the personality of the partnership and its architecture. The architects wanted to be presented with an idea that would surprise and excite them, in the same way they present architecture ideas for their clients.
A construction of letterforms was designed working with Gill Sans Light that referenced the vertical structure of a house the architects had designed for my family and me.
At first, the viewer is confronted with an almost abstract architectural form. Looking closer, a name is deciphered as Stevens Lawson Architects. The name is available, but the figure - the structure of letterforms - is the identity.
The partnership wanted, as well, a small profile document to promote their wider architecture desires. A solution for this grew out of the architects' appreciation of origami that extrapolated into cuts and folds.
The profile, when opened out, becomes a three dimensional structure, resulting in an unexpected play on the typography which changes direction as it moves its way around the form.
Stevens Lawson Architects have an identity that is a typographic representation of what they do in architecture. The design works on a professional level and on an emotional level - as does their architecture - unexpected and challenging.
