Case study overview

Stratex Networks Inc

Stratex Networks Inc is an industry leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of microwave radio solutions for point-to-point applications in licensed frequency bands, enabling the development of complex communications networks worldwide.

Designbrand was approached to provide solutions for a multitude of problem definitions, many of which had to be addressed in conjunction with engineering requirements.

The resulting unit required a life of 20 years' exposure to the extremes of tropical and sub-arctic elements.

Worldwide, technicians had to be able to install the Eclipse radio frequency converter in adverse conditions, while relying on a single tool.

The appearance of the Eclipse needed to display an individual aesthetic.

It should tip the scale in Stratex's favour in the decision-making process of the network buyers.

The base plate of the unit was to be die cast, allowing fine detail in the solution while providing sufficient heat sinking.

The size and efficiency of the heat sink fins was prioritised - optimising performance, weight and aesthetics.

The main body was designed as a deep-drawn sheet metal cowl.

Designbrand worked closely with the Stratex engineering team to achieve total weather proofing, whilst minimising mechanical fasteners and allowing accessibility to all connectors on the unit.

A karabiner attachment point and optional handle allowed network operators to increase work safety for their field crews.

Designbrand liaised with the in-house design engineers, as well as the Stratex marketing department in California to complement their expertise in engineering development and market knowledge.

This enabled Stratex immediate access to design evaluation, ergonomic analysis, concept design and visualisation, and allowed a quick turn around for the project.

The Eclipse unit is now sold worldwide.
