Case study overview

Task Technology Ltd

Task exports computer-based operating systems for service stations and retail outlets, these call control all retailing functions (including forecourt operations), stock control, and all other business functions.

In 1990, they were planning a redeveloped product moving from the .dos-based operating system to a Graphic User Interface using the new windows system.

Task required an operator console that reflected the changes in computer technology and software development that had occurred since their original unit had been developed.

They wanted fast, accurate and reliable data capture at the point of sale terminal.

Design development - The initial design role was to assist with the development of a new graphical user interface. In completing this bpd developed a function analysis that dramatically reduced the number of key-based operations needed to work the system.

This was achieved using the inherent 'intelligence' of the planned software as well as the peripheral equipment such as barcode scanners to increase the speed and accuracy of data entry.

The product - A terminal that enables the operator to focus entirely on the customer and the screen using keypad controls similar to a games console.

Three 'keys' operate all input functions with the numeric pad to backup the barcode scanner. The compact design of the keypad has strong ergonomic features.

Innovations - Simplifying the onscreen information on the basis that only items shown on screen required any operator action and that these could be completed with a single key press. Using five general screen zones or information rather than numerous specific item sites.

The reduction of keys eliminating the need to look from screen to keyboard and back again to complete any action.

Operator training was reduced from five days to four to five hours with an operational accuracy of 95 percent at that time.

Launched in 1992, the screen system and keyboard are still in production. They are in operation throughout New Zealand, and in South East Asia, Europe and the United States.
