Case study overview
Te Papa
Design of a major publication 'Icons Nga Taonga' representing iconic items from Te Papa's collections.
The project presented challenges at every turn. The book itself, at 320 pages, is an impressive undertaking.
The items drawn from Te Papa's vast collections were hugely varied.
Working with nine editors and 40 writers, various objects of differing sizes and shapes made fitting both the object and text to each page an extensive and delicate process.
Every item in the book had to be photographed, requiring a detailed brief for each. The images are then digitally retouched and carefully colour corrected.
The typography is elegant, understated and highly crafted, reinforcing the positioning of this book - a national icon, but one you can keep on your coffee table.
The book is in its second print-run as the first edition sold out completely. A new smaller traveller's edition is currently in production.
