Urlar: Brand Development

Conveying the Scottish heritage of the Urlar brand in a distinctly New World manner was a challenge taken up with zeal by the team at Tardis Design in Wellington. 'Urlar' which is Gaelic for earth or foundation is the rebranded name of the acclaimed Thomson's Trail Wines from the Wairarapa.

The inspiration behind the label was the nineteenth Arts and Craft movement which revived the romanticism of hand-finishing. An intricate William Morris thistle pattern expressed in a contemporary tone forms the base layer of the label. Gracing this backdrop is a foiled thistle florette which signals the immigration of Angus and Davina Thomson from Scotland to New Zealand -- where they teamed up with renowned local winemaker Guy McMaster. Their commitment to organic principles is highlighted alongside their journey and dedication to superbly crafted wines.
