Otago Institute of Design

The OiD concept is to create a Design Institute that is designed to function collaboratively with industry partners, as well as being a respected educational institution. Design is a business-oriented discipline, and the integration of design educational institutions into the business community is a logical step for educational quality and the economy. The activities of OiD aim to be closely integrated into the regional and national economy, and with national and international professional design networks. Educational design projects and academic research are already engaging with industry partners, and external design professionals

The Otago Institute of Design (OiD) is a joint venture between the Polytechnic (OP) and the University of Otago (UO) The founding principle behind the OiD was to enable a collaboration between the OP Design School and UO Design Studies, in order to: 1)create a combined centre of excellence in education and research 2)increase technology transfer, enabling economic transformation through wider commercial uptake of design practices, leading to better products and services, and greater export opportunities. 3)facilitate industry engagement with design practice. 5)promote excellence in commercial design practice, both locally and nationally
